Behind the Scenes: What a Zoom Piano Lesson Looks Like

Curious about online piano lessons?

Many people are dubious about the benefits of online piano lessons.

Will my kid really stay focused?

Will they develop real musical skill?

Can a Zoom lesson match the experience of an in-person teacher?

As a professional online piano teacher with years of experience, I can confidently say YES! My students stay engaged, improve consistently, and genuinely enjoy their lessons. In this post, I’ll walk you through what an online piano lesson looks like—and why so many families keep coming back.

What You Need Before Class

Setup is easier than you might think! Be sure to have

  • A laptop or tablet with Zoom (phone not recommended)

  • A piano or keyboard (88 keys and touch sensitive is best, read my keyboard buying guide here)

  • A device stand or music stand to position your laptop/tablet (a chair with a stack of books works well too!)

I provide a step-by-step video guide so parents can easily set up Zoom without tech frustration. Many families appreciate how smooth and stress-free I make the entire process.

Using software and a midi cable to give students the best visual demonstrations possible. You can't get this in a traditional piano lesson!

Interactive Learning

For new students taking their first lesson with me, I use a series of short games and activities to introduce concepts and get to know them and their playing level.

  • Would You Rather? Questions with slides help me get to know a student’s personality and preferences. Would you rather have a robot to clean your room or a robot that does your homework?

  • Rhythm Activities: Fun and energizing rhythm activities that help me assess their reading level

  • Copycat: Can the student imitate my short musical patterns?

  • Improvisation: I use a structured song with prompts for younger children, and cool sounding scales for older students

  • Short song: I either screen share sheet music or demonstrate using my light-up keyboard to teach an easy or familiar song

  • Games: Board games with an overhead camera, or through screen sharing, I have dozens of options for fun learning and review! This is usually my student’s favorite part of the lesson.

Why My Online Lessons Stand Out

Customized Curriculum

Each child’s lessons are tailored to their personality, pace, and musical interests. This year I’ve created personalized arrangements of Hedwig’s Theme, Beatles tunes, Rainbow Connection, Imperial March from Star Wars, Everything is Awesome from the Lego movie, and more!

PracticeSpaceApp

This is how I send practice assignments, videos, and sheet music! It also allows students to share videos or ask me questions between lessons when they need extra help. It even has a motivational practice tracker, so your student can participate in Practice Challenges and earn digital prizes for their hard work!

Engaging Games & Technology

With screen sharing, music games, rhythm activities, and a light-up keyboard, learning feels more like play while still achieving serious musical growth. I even create personalized games using their favorite characters, animals, and colors, so your child will be begging for more piano lessons!

Convenient, No-Commute Scheduling

Your child can take lessons from anywhere! Ideal for families with busy schedules or frequent travel. Sign up for the whole school year to reserve a weekly time on my schedule, or purchase a package of lessons for flexible scheduling.

What Parents Say About Online Lessons

Here are some reviews I’ve received from parents who purchased online piano lessons or classes with me!

“Thank you so much for making a positive impact on my kid and generating curiosity to learn keyboard.  She absolutely loved all of your sessions and your teaching methods.”

“What a fun class! Perfect for kids with a little attention span (a.k.a. kids!) Taya is knowledgeable, patient and charismatic! My kid went from not wanting piano classes to asking for more, thanks to Taya!”

“My daughter loved this course! Miss Taya was wonderful, she keeps things fun and engaging while covering the basics of piano, rhythm and even reading music. We will definitely be coming back for more classes with Miss Taya”
